The Rooted Birthwork Collective, formerly known as the Rooted & Resilient Doula Program, was founded in 2019 by Jessica Johnson in partnership with Black Ottawa Connect.
Our mission is to promote reproductive justice and equity by providing culturally relevant support and advocacy to black families at all stages of their reproductive journeys. Through a lens of empowerment, agency, and holistic well-being, we aim to improve social and health outcomes, reduce barriers to accessing reproductive health services, and contribute to building healthier communities.
We envision a world where black families have the resources, support, and agency to make informed decisions about their reproductive health and well-being. By addressing the unique needs and cultural contexts of black individuals and communities, we strive to create a future where all families can thrive with dignity and equity.
We are committed to dismantling systemic barriers and addressing the historical and structural inequalities that impact black families' access to reproductive healthcare and resources.
We believe in the power of black individuals and communities to define their own reproductive journeys, make informed choices, and advocate for their rights and preferences.
We recognize and honor the diverse experiences, traditions, and values within black communities, and we provide support that is culturally relevant, respectful, and affirming.
We understand that black families face intersecting forms of oppression based on race, gender, class, and other factors, and we work to address these intersecting oppressions in our advocacy and support efforts.
We collaborate with black-led organizations, community leaders, and stakeholders to center black voices, build collective power, and advance reproductive justice for black families.
We hold ourselves accountable to black families we serve, continuously seeking feedback, learning, and improving our practices to better meet their needs and uphold their rights and dignity.
